AvaTrade Review 2026: Regulation, Real Costs and the Inactivity Fee Review

AvaTrade is the broker you choose when regulation matters more to you than the last decimal of a spread. It is licensed in Ireland, Australia, Japan, South Africa, the UAE and more, it has been around since 2006, and in October 2026 it agreed to buy the FXCM business. What you pay for that safety is a single commission-free account that is never the cheapest, gold pricing that runs wider than average, and an inactivity fee that catches a lot of people out.

What is changing at AvaTrade in 2026

Two pieces of news are worth knowing before you open an account.

October 2026AvaTrade agreed to buy the FXCM business. On 16 October, AvaTrade Markets Ltd signed a definitive agreement to acquire substantially all of the assets and operations of Stratos Group International, the Jefferies subsidiary that runs FXCM. The transfer is expected to take about 120 days. FXCM is one of the oldest names in retail forex, so this makes AvaTrade a noticeably bigger group.
September 2026The Poland branch is closing. AvaTrade’s head of Polish operations announced his departure and the closure of the local office. He said Polish clients and partners will keep being served through AvaTrade’s international operations.

Neither event changes anything for existing clients today. The FXCM deal is a sign of a broker that is growing, not shrinking. If you are an FXCM client, expect communication about your account over the coming months, and read it carefully when it arrives.

Regulation: where AvaTrade is strongest

This is the main reason to choose AvaTrade. Few retail brokers hold this many licences from serious regulators at once.

Entity Regulator Retail leverage
AVA Trade EU Ltd Central Bank of Ireland (C53877) 1:30
DT Direct Investment Hub Ltd CySEC, Cyprus (347/17) 1:30
Ava Capital Markets Australia ASIC (AFSL 406684) 1:30
Ava Trade Japan K.K. Japan FSA 1:25
Ava Capital Markets Pty FSCA, South Africa (FSP 45984) Higher
Ava Trade Middle East Ltd ADGM FSRA, Abu Dhabi Higher
ATrade Ltd Israel Securities Authority 1:30
Ava Trade Markets Ltd BVI Financial Services Commission Higher

EU clients are covered by Ireland’s investor compensation scheme for up to €20,000 in eligible cases, on top of negative balance protection and segregated funds. Canadian clients are served through a partnership with Friedberg Direct rather than an AvaTrade licence.

The same caution we gave in our Vantage review applies here, only less strongly. Traders in South Asia, Africa and much of the Middle East are usually onboarded by the BVI entity. That licence is real but light, and there is no compensation scheme behind it. The difference with AvaTrade is that the group around that entity is heavily supervised elsewhere, and that counts for something. Check the company named on your client agreement, and verify it in our licence checker.

Costs: one account, no commission

AvaTrade keeps pricing simple. There is one retail account, no commission, and the cost is built into the spread. ForexBrokers.com measured an average EUR/USD spread of 0.93 pips. That is reasonable for a commission-free account, but it is not where the cheapest brokers sit. Here is one standard lot of EUR/USD compared with a raw-spread account:

AvaTrade standard$9.30

0.93 pips × $10, no commission

Vantage Raw ECN$7.27

0.127 pips × $10 + $6.00 commission

A two-dollar gap per lot doesn’t matter if you trade a few lots a month. It matters if you trade twenty. AvaTrade has no raw-spread account at all, so heavy traders have no cheaper option. Professional clients get tighter spreads, and there are premium tiers for large balances, but most retail traders will pay the standard price.

Gold costs more here

This is the weak spot for our community. In FXEmpire’s mid-2025 spread test, AvaTrade’s gold spread was roughly a quarter wider than the industry average, at both the London and New York opens. On a single trade it is a few dollars. On a strategy that trades gold every day, it adds up to real money over a year. If gold is most of what you trade, compare AvaTrade’s live gold spread with one or two other brokers before you commit. Our gold contract specs lesson shows how to read gold spreads in dollars per lot.

Overnight swaps

Here AvaTrade does better than average. In FXEmpire’s check, AvaTrade’s swap charges on EUR/USD and gold were below the industry norm. Swing traders who hold for days lose some of the spread disadvantage back through cheaper financing.

The fee most people miss

AvaTrade’s inactivity and administration fees

Several reviewers report AvaTrade’s published terms as follows: if your account has no activity for three consecutive months, an inactivity fee of 50 units of your account currency is charged ($50, €50 or £50). After twelve months of inactivity, an annual administration fee of 100 units is added. The fees are taken from your balance.

This is the single most common complaint about AvaTrade. The usual story is someone who opens an account, deposits $100 to try it out, stops trading, and comes back a year later to find the balance gone. Three months is a short window compared with most brokers, many of which charge nothing at all.

The fix is simple. Either keep the account active, or withdraw your balance before you step away. Check the exact current terms for your entity in AvaTrade’s fee schedule, since they can differ by region.

AvaProtect: insurance for one trade

AvaProtect is the one feature no other broker on our list offers. When you open a trade in the AvaTrade app or WebTrader, you can pay an upfront fee to protect it for a set period. If the trade loses money during that period, AvaTrade refunds the loss. Behind the scenes it works like a hedge using an option, which is why the fee is quoted before you open.

Is it worth it? Sometimes. It can make sense around a high-impact event you can’t avoid, or for a trader who wants a hard ceiling on what one position can cost. But it is not free, it only lasts for the period you buy, and it is not available on MT4 or MT5. A properly placed stop loss and sensible position size do the same job most of the time, at no cost. Treat AvaProtect as an occasional tool, not a substitute for risk management.

Platforms and copy trading

AvaTrade has one of the widest platform line-ups of any broker.

  • MT4 and MT5 — full MetaTrader with expert advisors and custom indicators, plus AvaTrade’s Guardian Angel add-on, which gives feedback on your trading habits.
  • AvaTrade app and WebTrader — AvaTrade’s own platforms, and the only places to use AvaProtect.
  • AvaOptions — trade forex options as well as spot forex, which very few retail brokers allow. It suits experienced traders.
  • AvaFutures — exchange-traded futures, with TradingView charts.
  • Copy trading — DupliTrade, and AvaSocial in some regions.

The weakness is research. AvaTrade relies mostly on Trading Central and video analysis, with little written commentary of its own.

For signal followers

AvaTrade supports MT4 and MT5, so it works with Telegram Trade Linker. TTL copies each signal’s single entry, stop loss and take profit into your account automatically. Because AvaTrade has no commission, every trade’s cost is simply the spread. That keeps your results easy to compare with our published signal performance.

Swap-free accounts: read the conditions

AvaTrade offers Islamic accounts, but with restrictions. Crypto CFDs are not available on them, and positions held longer than a few days can attract normal charges or an administration fee. Some reviewers also report exotic pairs being excluded. If you need a swap-free account for religious reasons, ask AvaTrade to confirm the current conditions in writing before you fund it.

Deposits and withdrawals

The minimum deposit is $100. AvaTrade charges no deposit or withdrawal fees itself. Cards, bank wire and, outside the EU and Australia, e-wallets such as Skrill and Neteller are supported. Withdrawals go back to the method you deposited with and are usually processed within one business day. Cards can take up to five business days to arrive, and bank wires longer.

AvaTrade holds a strong 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from more than 13,000 reviews. The negative themes are familiar: some withdrawals delayed, and slow communication when document verification gets complicated. Verify your identity fully before you need to withdraw, and keep the same payment method throughout.

Education: a real strength

Education is where AvaTrade beats most brokers, including Vantage. AvaAcademy has structured courses by experience level, with quizzes and progress tracking, plus around a hundred articles and dozens of videos. For a complete beginner, it is a genuinely useful companion to our own free Trading Academy.

Who AvaTrade suits — and who it doesn’t

A good fit if you…

  • put regulation and the size of the group first
  • want one simple account with no commission
  • trade a few times a week rather than many times a day
  • want insurance on individual trades through AvaProtect
  • are interested in FX options or futures as well as CFDs
  • are a beginner who wants structured education

Look elsewhere if you…

  • trade gold heavily and every cent of spread counts
  • scalp or trade high volume and need raw pricing
  • may leave the account idle for months
  • need crypto on a swap-free account
  • want real shares rather than CFDs

3.5

Overall: 4.4 / 5. AvaTrade earns its score through regulation, platform choice and education. It loses points on cost: no raw account, gold spreads above average, and an inactivity fee that starts early.

The bottom line

AvaTrade is a broker you can trust to still be there in ten years, and the FXCM deal makes that more likely, not less. The pricing is fair rather than cheap, the platforms cover nearly every style, and AvaProtect is a genuinely unusual extra.

Choose it if you value safety and simplicity over the lowest possible cost. Skip it if you trade gold all day, need raw spreads, or might forget about the account for three months. And if you do open one, set a reminder: trade, or withdraw, before the inactivity clock runs out.
